Are you any good at networking? The importance of being memorable!

by admin on September 17, 2012

Attending events and networking in business is essential.  But do you have the skills to do it confidently and be memorable?

So you attend events, collect a bunch of business cards, look at them the next day and can’t remember what they look like, who they were or what their elevator speech was??  Here are a few tips to make you memorable and extend your business reach.

Be distinctive:  Wear something a little unusual (although still business), a bright coloured tie, a necklace that stands out, a bright pair of heels.  Good grooming can and will help you stand out in a good way.  You don’t have to go over the top just remember not to blend in – be memorable!

Always be attentive: Make sure you make eye contact and are listening to the people you are interacting with.  Don’t be looking over their shoulder for the next person to talk too.  Ask questions about themselves (their business), like how did you get started? What do you love the most about your business?  People love to talk about themselves, and questions like these keep conversations going.

Reinforce your business:  Most people are networking to see if you can bring them business, so unless you are asked questions, keep your business description short and to the point. People won’t remember longwinded elevator speeches, but remember to include: your name, your business name, your product/service and your location.  People remember locations/suburbs as they can identify with them.  Also – if your business name or location has an interesting story – tell people about it!  This will also make your business/product memorable.

Remember to always be open to chatting, smile, leave your body language relaxed and open and say hello to everyone that you make eye-contact with.  A smile from you may change someone’s day.
